The Belgian Coast stretches for 67 kilometres along the North Sea, from De Panne in the west to Knokke-Heist in the east. It is a region with its own character: broad sandy beaches, sweeping dunes, quiet polders and seaside resorts that each have their own atmosphere. The coastline links them all via the coastal tram, the longest tram line in the world.
If you are looking for a holiday home on the Belgian Coast, you are spoilt for choice. De Panne and Koksijde are closest to nature, with the dunes of De Westhoek within walking distance. Middelkerke and Ostend offer more life, shops and restaurants. Blankenberge and Zeebrugge draw families with children. Knokke-Heist, finally, has a character all its own, with galleries, elegant restaurants and luxury apartments.
Holiday homes on the Belgian Coast come in every size. Cosy beach apartments with sea views, spacious houses in the dunes, homes on the promenade overlooking the boulevard, or quiet bungalows just behind the dunes. Booking early pays off here, especially for the summer months and the school holidays.
The Belgian Coast is remarkably easy to reach. From Brussels or Antwerp you reach the seafront in about an hour and a half, and every resort has its own railway station. Once there, it is best to leave the car behind: the coastal tram runs from De Panne to Knokke, calling at every resort, so you can hop from one to the next without parking worries.
An apartment by the sea remains the most popular choice. Many homes sit on the promenade or just behind it, with a terrace or window looking out over the beach. For a couple or a small family, such a beach apartment is ideal: see the sea in the morning, walk to the beach during the day and dine nearby in the evening without taking the car. If you want more space, the coast also has family houses with several bedrooms, sometimes with a private garden or a place to store the bikes.
