A private pool is exclusive to your group: nobody else uses it during your stay. This is by far the most popular choice, as you do not have to consider other guests and the children can splash around whenever they like. Most holiday homes with a pool in our collection have such a private pool in the garden or inside the property.
A shared pool is sometimes found on larger holiday estates where several properties use the same pool. That can be sociable, but it is busier and less private. Always check the listing description to confirm whether the pool is private, as the difference in experience is considerable. Filter by private pool if you want the water entirely to yourselves.
An outdoor pool is wonderful in summer: swimming in the open air, sunbathing on the terrace alongside it and a refreshing dip in the evening. Many outdoor pools are heated, which extends the season well beyond July and August. In the off-season, however, an unheated outdoor pool is often too cold to use.
An indoor or covered pool is usable throughout the year regardless of the weather, making it ideal for an autumn or winter break. The choice is smaller and the price is generally higher, as such a pool requires more maintenance and heating. Ask the owner whether the pool is heated and which months it is open, so that you do not arrive to find it closed.
The Ardennes have the widest range of properties with a pool. Spacious chalets, renovated farmhouses and group holiday homes with a private pool in the garden, often surrounded by woodland. Around Durbuy, La Roche, Bouillon and the Semois valley you will find holiday homes where a pool is the main attraction, ideal for families and larger groups in the summer.
The Flemish Ardennes and the Campine are also seeing more properties with pools, handy for anyone who prefers not to travel far. Along the coast a private pool is rare, because the sea is the great attraction there. Whichever region you choose, filter by pool and check carefully whether it is private and heated to find the right property.
Ask the owner whether the pool is open all year and whether it is heated, as an unheated outdoor pool is often unusable outside the summer months. Also ask whether there is a surcharge for using the pool or for heating it, since a heated pool uses a considerable amount of energy.
If you are travelling with children, check the safety provisions: a cover, a fence, a ladder with a handrail or a separate shallow section make a significant difference. Ask the owner if the listing does not make this clear. That way the whole group can enjoy the pool without worry throughout the holiday.
