Renting a holiday home around Bruges gives you the best of both worlds: the unique beauty of the medieval old town within cycling distance, and at the same time the calm of a smaller municipality or a green estate away from the tourist crowds. Places such as Damme, Jabbeke, Zedelgem, Oostkamp and Torhout offer more affordable accommodation, each with its own character.

Damme, the small town beside the Bruges to Sluis canal, is the best-known village in the area. Since 1997 it has held the official title of Flanders' book town, with dozens of bookshops and antiquarian dealers packed into a handful of streets, and it is where the legend of Till Eulenspiegel is set. Beside the village runs the Damse Vaart, a dead-straight, tree-lined canal dug on the orders of Napoleon, now one of the finest cycling routes in West Flanders.

Anyone heading further inland reaches the Houtland, the rolling, wooded region around Torhout, which likes to call itself the capital of the Houtland. Oostkamp counts among the most wooded municipalities in the area, with castle estates such as Tillegem, Beisbroek and d'Aertrycke, and the abbey of Zevenkerken near Sint-Andries. Together they form a landscape of avenues, ponds and grand gateways, ideal for a long walk or a bike ride.

Holiday homes in the Bruges area range from renovated polder farmhouses with large gardens to characterful town houses right before the edge of Bruges old town. The region's cycle node network covers more than 1,070 kilometres, so you can cycle from your holiday home to Bruges, Damme or the Houtland without a car and still be back by evening.

The region has a cuisine of its own too. Around Oostkamp and Torhout you find farm shops with fresh vegetables, cheese and cold cuts, and in Damme the restaurants along the Markt like to serve regional dishes with fish from the Zwin area or game from the woods of the Houtland. A glass of jenever or a local regional beer is a common feature on the menu.

Things to do in the Bruges area

The Bruges area is all about travelling slowly: cycling, walking and a stop at a village café along the way. The region sits so close to Bruges that you can visit the canals and the belfry in the morning and be cycling between the meadows again that same afternoon, never far from your holiday home.

Jabbeke has a surprising link to modern art: the museum of painter Constant Permeke, set up in his former house and studio, can still be visited there. Sijsele and Zedelgem are quiet bases with village squares, local bakeries and direct cycle links to both Bruges and the coast.

Anyone who prefers walking to cycling will find kilometres of waymarked trails in the woods around Oostkamp and along the avenues of the castle estates, often passing a picnic spot or a pond along the way. In summer, more than one village holds a flea market or village festival on its square, a good chance to soak up the local atmosphere without the crowds.

Every autumn, one of the villages in the region hosts a harvest festival or fair, with local produce, music and a lively market on the village square. It is a good opportunity to get to know the local community, away from the busiest tourist season.

Damme, Till Eulenspiegel and the Damse Vaart

Damme began in the 12th century as an outer harbour for Bruges and grew into a prosperous trading town, until the silting up of the Zwin brought that to an end. Today it is best known as a book town: the small streets around the Markt hold dozens of antiquarian bookshops housed in historic buildings. The statue of Till Eulenspiegel on the market square recalls the trickster from the 19th-century novel of the same name by Charles De Coster, who set the story in and around Damme.

The Damse Vaart, also known as Napoleon's canal, was dug in the early 19th century on his orders as part of a larger military canal scheme. The straight waterway, lined with a double row of pollard willows and poplars, is today one of the most photographed cycling routes in the region, with Damme as the ideal stop for a coffee or a glass of jenever.

Besides the bookshops, Damme also has an impressive 15th-century town hall and the Church of Our Lady, with its unfinished tower that can be climbed for a small fee for a view over the polders. Anyone who prefers sailing to cycling can take a boat trip along part of the canal in summer, while the towpath along the banks remains open to walkers and cyclists all year round.

Cycling through the Houtland and the castle triangle

Around Oostkamp and Sint-Andries lies a string of castle estates that once served as country residences for the Bruges middle classes. Tillegem Castle, with its moat and park, is now a provincial estate with play forests and walking trails. Beisbroek Castle and d'Aertrycke Castle sit within cycling distance of each other, and the abbey of Zevenkerken offers quiet beneath centuries-old trees.

Torhout, further inland, likes to be known as the capital of the Houtland, the wooded region between Bruges, Roeselare and Tielt. The cycle node network links the castles, the woods and the villages between them with ease, and anyone wanting to spend a whole day without ever taking the same route twice will find plenty of kilometres here to do it.

Among the castle estates there are also a few lesser-known spots, such as the Rijckevelde woods and the ponds around Oostkamp, home to herons and moorhens. Anyone wanting to combine several sights in one day can plan a loop starting at Tillegem Castle, running through the woods of Oostkamp to Zedelgem and back to Bruges via Sint-Andries, plenty for a full day without rushing.

For anyone who prefers to explore by car: most of the estates are also easy to reach by car, with parking at the edge of the park. Combine a morning walk at Tillegem with an afternoon in Damme, for example, for a compact introduction to the whole region in a single day.

Frequently asked questions about the Bruges area

How far from the centre of Bruges are the holiday homes?
It depends very much on the property. Houses in Damme are 7 kilometres from the centre, a twenty-minute cycle ride along the Damse Vaart. Homes in Jabbeke or Zedelgem are 10 to 15 minutes away by car. Houses on the edge of Bruges itself are within walking or cycling distance. Always check the distance when booking and whether bikes are available.
Can I visit Bruges by bike from my holiday home in the Bruges area?
Yes, the region is one of the best-signposted cycling areas in Flanders, with over 1,070 kilometres of cycle nodes. The network links most villages and hamlets to the town centre. The Damse Vaart towards Damme is one of the loveliest routes. Ask the owner whether bikes are available at the holiday home.
Are there dog-friendly holiday homes in the Bruges area?
Yes, several polder farmhouses and homes in the Houtland or around Damme welcome dogs. The polders and the woods around Oostkamp offer excellent walking routes for dogs. Always check when booking whether pets are allowed and whether the garden is fenced.
Is parking easy near holiday homes in the Bruges area?
Homes outside the centre almost always have private parking or a driveway. Anyone staying in the centre of Bruges itself must reckon with paid car parks and car-free zones. Outside the centre, parking is simple and free, a real advantage of a home in the quiet countryside.
What is Damme and why is it worth a visit?
Damme is Flanders' official book town, with dozens of antiquarian bookshops packed into a handful of streets around the Markt. The village sits beside the Damse Vaart, once dug on Napoleon's orders, and is associated with the legend of Till Eulenspiegel. A cycle ride along the canal followed by a coffee on the Markt is a local classic.
What else is there to see in the Bruges area besides Damme?
Around Oostkamp and Sint-Andries lie castle estates such as Tillegem, Beisbroek and d'Aertrycke, with play forests and walking trails. Torhout, capital of the wooded Houtland, and the Permeke Museum in Jabbeke are also worth the trip. A stay in the Bruges area is never dull.
How far is the coast from the Bruges area?
Very close: Zeebrugge and Blankenberge are a quarter of an hour to twenty minutes' drive away, Knokke and De Haan half an hour. Many guests therefore combine a day of culture in Bruges with a day on the beach. The train works well too: from Bruges station you reach Blankenberge or Zeebrugge in a quarter of an hour.
When is the best time to stay in the Bruges area?
The Bruges area can be visited all year round. Spring and summer are the liveliest but also the busiest in the Bruges old town; that is exactly when a holiday home in the quiet countryside shows its worth. The Christmas period, with the lit canals and Christmas market, is magical, and in January and February Damme and the Houtland are almost yours alone.
Do you need a car to stay in the Bruges area?
Not necessarily. Bruges itself is reached by direct train from Brussels in about an hour, and from most holiday homes in the region you can cycle to the centre in half an hour. To explore the Houtland and the coast a car is handy, though the train also runs easily to Blankenberge and Ostend.
Can I visit Tillegem Castle?
Tillegem Castle itself is not open as a museum, but the surrounding park is freely accessible and a popular destination for walking and cycling. There are play forests for children, picnic spots and a café in the outbuilding. The estate is also used for events and weddings, so check in advance whether something is planned that day.
Is the Bruges area suitable for families with children?
Certainly. The play forests at Tillegem and Beisbroek, the quiet cycle paths and the family-friendly atmosphere of Damme make the region appealing for families. Bruges itself is within cycling distance for a day in town, and many holiday homes in the region have a fenced garden where children can play safely.
Can Damme be combined with a visit to Sluis in the Netherlands?
Certainly, Sluis is barely 8 kilometres from Damme, just across the Dutch border. Many visitors combine a shopping trip to Sluis with a walk through Damme. For anyone renting a holiday home in the region, half a day across the border makes a pleasant change of pace.
What is the difference between the Bruges area and the Belgian coast?
The coast is all about beach and sea, the Bruges area is about polders, canals and castles inland. The two lie close together, so many guests combine them: a few days of calm and cycling inland, followed by a few days on the beach.
Are there B&Bs in the Bruges area besides holiday homes?
Yes, besides self-contained holiday homes there are also guest rooms and small B&Bs in Damme, Jabbeke and the villages around Oostkamp, often in a renovated farmhouse or a characterful manor house. A good option for anyone who would rather not rent a whole house but still wants the calm of the countryside.
Where can I hire a bike in the Bruges area?
In Bruges itself, but also in Damme and Jabbeke, several bike shops and tourist offices hire out regular and electric bikes by the day or week. Some holiday homes in the region also have their own bikes available; ask when booking.
