Special feature
Famenne-Ardenne UNESCO Global Geopark and the Calestienne

The Famenne is a broad, green lowland that stretches like a belt between the Condroz and the high Ardennes. Where the Condroz is a high limestone plateau and the Ardennes are wooded and hilly, the Famenne is by contrast low, open and rich in water, with meadows, hedgerows and scattered copses. Rochefort, Marche-en-Famenne and Han-sur-Lesse are the best-known places, each with its own character and a rich array of things to see.

Along the southern edge of the Famenne runs the Calestienne, a narrow band of limestone where the water carves its way underground. This is why you find Belgium's most famous caves here. At Han-sur-Lesse, the river Lesse disappears completely underground and re-emerges after a spectacular journey through the dripstone chambers. Rochefort has the Grotte de Lorette, and the whole area is part of the Famenne-Ardenne UNESCO Global Geopark, which protects the remarkable interplay of rock, water and nature.

Holiday homes in the Famenne are often spacious farmhouses and country houses in or near the villages, quietly set but close to the attractions. It is a region that effortlessly unites nature, heritage and family outings: the caves of Han in the morning, a walk through the limestone grasslands in the afternoon and a Trappist from Rochefort on a village terrace in the evening. The castle of Lavaux-Sainte-Anne, a fairy-tale moated castle, is one of the highlights of the area.

Things to do in the Famenne

The caves of Han-sur-Lesse are the region's top attraction. An old tram takes you through the woods to the entrance, after which a guide leads you through impressive dripstone chambers to the point where the Lesse comes back to the surface. In the adjoining wildlife park you can spot wild boar, deer, wolves and bears in large natural enclosures. Allow half a day to a full day for the whole estate.

Rochefort is the region's second hub. Besides the Grotte de Lorette, a cave with one of the largest underground chambers in Europe, there is the abbey of Saint-Rémy, where the world-famous Trappist Rochefort is brewed. The town itself has a pleasant centre, a castle ruin and numerous walking routes in the valleys of the Lomme and the Lesse.

Marche-en-Famenne is the largest town and the administrative capital of the region. It has a pleasant shopping centre, pavement cafés, markets and a lively cultural scene. From here you can explore the surrounding villages and the limestone grasslands, or take a trip to the moated castle of Lavaux-Sainte-Anne, which today houses three museums.

The whole of the Famenne is decidedly family-friendly. The mix of caves, animals, castles and quiet nature means that children and adults alike stay busy for days on end. And anyone wanting more peace will find plenty of quiet lanes and fields between the villages to unwind completely.

Away from the big attractions, the Famenne is above all a region for walking and cycling. The valley of the Lesse and the Lomme, the limestone grasslands of the Geopark and the wooded edges on the flank of the Ardennes offer routes for every level, with orchids in spring and warm autumn colour later in the year. From the villages, waymarked loops take you past the finest spots in a few hours. Anyone who prefers the water will find on the Lesse, downstream towards Houyet and Anseremme, one of the most classic kayak descents in Wallonia, well worth it on a warm summer day.

The caves and the Calestienne: the secret underground

The Famenne owes its caves to the Calestienne, a narrow strip of limestone along the southern edge of the region. Limestone dissolves slowly in water, and so, over thousands of years, the Lesse carved out an entire underground network. At Han-sur-Lesse, the river disappears at the Trou de Belvaux and only re-emerges kilometres further on, after a journey through chambers full of stalactites and stalagmites. It is one of the finest cave complexes in Europe.

Besides Han, Rochefort also has its cave, the Grotte de Lorette, with an impressive central chamber where demonstrations using hot air are given regularly. The underground world, however, is only one side of the story. On the surface, the same limestone gives rise to the rare pelouses calcaires, dry limestone grasslands full of orchids and butterflies, which are among the richest nature in Belgium.

For some years now, the whole region has been recognised as the Famenne-Ardenne UNESCO Global Geopark. This label protects and opens up the remarkable geological heritage, from the caves and the Calestienne to the transition between the low Famenne and the high Ardennes. Visitor centres, guided walks and theme routes help you discover the story of rock and water for yourself.

Castles, villages and the Trappist of Rochefort

The castle of Lavaux-Sainte-Anne is the most photogenic building in the Famenne. It is a true moated castle, with thick round towers that reflect in the surrounding moat and meadows. Inside, three museums tell of the hunting past, the nature of the region and everyday life in times gone by. All around run footpaths through the damp meadows where storks and herons forage.

The villages of the Famenne are built from a mix of limestone and red brick, which gives them a warmer look than the austere bluestone of the Condroz. Many farmhouses have been converted into spacious holiday homes with a garden and a view over the fields. In and around the villages you will find farm shops selling regional produce: cheese, cured meats, craft beer and, in season, game.

No visit to the Famenne is complete without a Trappist from Rochefort. The monks of the abbey of Saint-Rémy brew their dark, powerful beers there, which you will find on the menu of almost every café in the region. Combine a cave visit or a walk with a spell on a terrace and a local beer, and you taste the Famenne at its best.

When to visit the Famenne and how to get there

The Famenne can be visited all year round, but the caves and the countryside are at their best from spring to autumn. In summer, the Han estate is at its busiest, so anyone seeking quiet does better to come in May, June or September. Autumn colours the woods and puts game and beer cooking in the spotlight, while the caves keep a constant temperature inside all year round.

The region is easy to reach. The E411 motorway between Brussels and Luxembourg has exits at Rochefort and Marche-en-Famenne, and the N4 regional road crosses the area. Jemelle, right by Rochefort, and Marche both have a railway station, which makes the Famenne reachable without a car too. From Brussels or Namur it is about an hour to an hour and a half's drive.

Anyone staying a week in the Famenne has plenty of time to discover the region and its neighbours. A day for the caves of Han, a day for Rochefort and the abbey, a day for Marche and Lavaux-Sainte-Anne, and still time left for a trip to Dinant, the Condroz or the high Ardennes. With your quiet holiday home as a base, you combine nature, heritage and family fun without having to drive far.

Frequently asked questions about the Famenne

How much does a holiday home in the Famenne cost?
Expect to pay around €90 to €180 a night for a farmhouse or country house sleeping four to six. The Famenne is popular with families thanks to its caves and nature, so prices run a little higher during school holidays. Large group homes are available too, at a corresponding rate.
Where exactly is the Famenne?
The Famenne is a green lowland in the south of Wallonia, between the Condroz plateau to the north and the high Ardennes to the south. The region lies mostly in the provinces of Namur and Luxembourg, with Rochefort, Marche-en-Famenne and Han-sur-Lesse as its best-known places.
What is there to do in the Famenne?
The main draws are the caves of Han-sur-Lesse with their wildlife park, the Grotte de Lorette and the Trappist abbey in Rochefort, and the moated castle of Lavaux-Sainte-Anne. There are also walks through the limestone grasslands of the UNESCO Global Geopark and welcoming towns such as Marche-en-Famenne. It is a decidedly family-friendly region.
What are the caves of Han-sur-Lesse?
At Han-sur-Lesse, the river Lesse disappears completely underground and carves a network of caves out of the limestone. An old tram takes you to the entrance, after which a guide leads you through impressive dripstone chambers. It is one of the finest cave complexes in Europe and, together with the adjoining wildlife park, an outing of half a day to a full day.
What is the difference between the Famenne and the Ardennes?
The Famenne is a low, green lowland of meadows, caves and limestone grasslands, while the Ardennes proper are higher, more wooded and more hilly. The Famenne lies as a gentler belt just to the north of them. The transition between the two, with the limestone of the Calestienne, is exactly what makes the UNESCO Global Geopark so special.
What is the Famenne-Ardenne UNESCO Global Geopark?
It is a recognised geopark that protects and opens up the geological heritage of the region: the caves, the limestone of the Calestienne, the limestone grasslands and the transition between the low Famenne and the high Ardennes. Visitor centres, guided walks and theme routes help you discover the interplay of rock and water for yourself.
Can I bring my dog to a holiday home in the Famenne?
Many holiday homes in the Famenne welcome dogs, especially the rural farmhouses and country houses with a garden. The meadows and forest paths of the Geopark are ideal for walking a dog. The caves and the wildlife park of Han do apply their own rules, however, so check these in advance.
How far is the Famenne from Namur and the Ardennes?
The Famenne lies centrally. Namur is about an hour away via the N4 or the E411, and the high Ardennes, with La Roche and Saint-Hubert, begin just south of the region. Dinant and the Condroz are a short distance away too, which makes the Famenne a handy base.
Can I taste Trappist beer in Rochefort?
Yes, the monks of the abbey of Saint-Rémy near Rochefort brew the world-famous Trappist Rochefort. The beer is not sold at the abbey itself, but you will find it in almost every café and shop in the region. A spell on a terrace in Rochefort or Han with a local Trappist is part of a visit to the Famenne.
Are there B&Bs in the Famenne as well as holiday homes?
Yes, besides self-contained farmhouses and country houses there are guest rooms and small B&Bs in and around Rochefort, Marche and Han-sur-Lesse, often in a renovated farmhouse or a village house. A good option for a short stay or for anyone who would rather not rent a whole house.
