Ghent is one of the liveliest and most culturally rich cities in Flanders. But anyone who rents a holiday home in the Ghent area deliberately chooses a different pace. The Meetjesland, north of the city, is a polder region of small villages, waterways and a silent openness that invites rest almost without your noticing. The Lys region to the south, with places such as Sint-Martens-Latem and Deurle, is seen as the Belgian Barbizon: here the Impressionist painters of the Latem school found their light in the early twentieth century.

The Waasland, east of Ghent in the shadow of the Scheldt, offers broad polders and a cultural heritage of its own. Lokeren, Sint-Niklaas and Dendermonde are day-trip towns thirty minutes away. The Scheldt meadows form a protected nature reserve with unique flora and fauna. A cycle ride along the Lys from Sint-Martens-Latem to Afsnee is one of the finest cycling routes in East Flanders.

Holiday homes around Ghent are varied: characterful polder farmhouses in the Meetjesland, elegant villas in the Lys region or spacious houses on the edge of Ghent. Anyone who wants to combine Ghent with nature and quiet finds it here. Thirty minutes' cycling from the historic centre, the Castle of the Counts and St Bavo's Cathedral, you stand in the middle of the polders.
