The word luxury is not always used sparingly in the rental world. A holiday home that calls itself a luxury property may turn out to be a perfectly ordinary house with a slightly nicer bathroom. Read the description carefully and look beyond the beautifully composed photographs. Are concrete features mentioned? Is there an amenity list? A good owner knows what they have and describes it plainly, without vague superlatives.

Reviews are your best ally. Previous guests write about things that are invisible in photographs: whether the sauna really heats up properly, whether the jacuzzi is well maintained, whether the bed is as comfortable as it looks. Also look at the owner's profile: someone who has lived in the property themselves or who responds actively to comments generally takes better care of their home than an anonymous remote manager.
