Hesbaye, known in Dutch as Haspengouw, is the region between Tongeren, Sint-Truiden and Borgloon and one of Belgium's best-kept secrets. The gently rolling landscape, dotted with apple and pear orchards, is reminiscent of Tuscany or the Normandy bocage. Every spring the whole region turns white and pink for the orchard blossom, a spectacle that draws more visitors year after year.

Tongeren, the oldest town in Belgium with its Gallo-Roman wall and renowned Gallo-Roman Museum, lies like a historical jewel at the heart of Hesbaye. Borgloon is known for its fruit wines and small wine cellars. Alden Biesen, the imposing castle estate of the Teutonic Order, is worth the trip. The region is also home to organic fruit farms where you buy directly from the grower.

Holiday homes in Hesbaye are often authentic Limburg farmhouses or converted farm buildings, with large gardens and wide views over the orchards. It is an ideal destination for anyone seeking peace, fond of walking or cycling, and keen to enjoy a genuine slice of Belgian country life still largely untouched by mass tourism.

The blossom usually starts between mid-March and mid-April, depending on the weather in winter and early spring. The most photogenic moment is when the apple trees are in full bloom, often from late March to early April. Local blossom blogs and the Toerisme Limburg website give up-to-date information.
What is there to do in Hesbaye outside the blossom season?
Hesbaye is worth a visit all year round. Tongeren with its antiques market and Gallo-Roman Museum, the fruit wine cellars of Borgloon, Alden Biesen castle and miles of node-based cycle routes through the orchards are just as rewarding in summer, autumn and winter. In autumn the trees change colour and apples and pears can be picked on the spot.
Is Hesbaye suitable for a romantic weekend?
Absolutely. The quiet Limburg farmhouses with panoramic views over the orchards, a glass of fruit wine by candlelight and the absence of mass tourism make Hesbaye an ideal destination for an atmospheric weekend for two. During the blossom season or in autumn it is a special experience.
How far is Hesbaye from Brussels or Antwerp?
Tongeren, the heart of Hesbaye, is about 1 hour from Brussels via the E40 and about 1 hour 10 minutes from Antwerp via the E313. Sint-Truiden is just as easy to reach. Hesbaye therefore combines very well with a city visit to Brussels or Liège, which is only 30 minutes away.
Are there good cycle routes in Hesbaye?
Yes. The node-based cycle network in Limburg is one of the best in Belgium. Flat to gently rolling routes pass orchards, country lanes and old farmhouses. A loop from Sint-Truiden via Borgloon to Tongeren and back is around 50 kilometres and shows the typical Hesbaye landscape in all its variety. Bicycles can be hired in Sint-Truiden and Tongeren.
What makes Tongeren so special?
Tongeren is widely regarded as the oldest town in Belgium, with a Gallo-Roman city wall, a rich past and the outstanding Gallo-Roman Museum. Every Sunday morning, the largest antiques market in the Benelux fills the town centre. Combine your visit with the basilica and a terrace on the main square, beneath the statue of Ambiorix.
Can I taste local produce in Hesbaye?
Absolutely, Hesbaye is the orchard of Belgium. Farm shops sell apples, pears and cherries straight from the orchard; in Borgloon you can taste the classic fruit syrup, and several estates produce fruit wines and cider. Many addresses have a vending machine by the roadside, handy for cyclists wanting to refuel along the way.
Can I bring my dog to Hesbaye?
In many holiday homes in Hesbaye, dogs are welcome; filter on pets allowed and check the house rules. The quiet country lanes between the orchards are ideal for walking your dog, including during blossom season. In nature reserves and on busy blossom days, keep your dog on a lead.
