Koksijde combines culture, nature and an authentic coastal identity in a way that few seaside resorts can. The ruins of Ten Duinen Abbey, a 13th-century Cistercian abbey built in the heart of the dunes, are one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Belgium. The abbey museum tells the story of the monks who lived here for centuries. The Hoge Blekker, the highest dune on the Belgian Coast at around 33 metres, offers a panorama stretching from the sea to the polders.
The village of Oostduinkerke is the only place in the world where fishermen on horseback still practise their trade. On heavy draught horses they ride into the surf to catch shrimps in trailing nets, a tradition recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. The Paul Delvaux Museum, dedicated to the Belgian surrealist painter, is based in Sint-Idesbald, also part of Koksijde.
Holiday homes in Koksijde range from dune villas in quiet surroundings to apartments a few minutes' cycle from the beach. The wide family beaches are less crowded than those of Blankenberge or Ostend. This is a coast for anyone seeking calm, culture and character.
