Nieuwpoort is different from most seaside resorts. Its centre lies not on the sea but on the river IJzer, and its marina, with around 2,500 berths, is the largest in Northern Europe. Water sports enthusiasts know Nieuwpoort as a mecca for sailing, kitesurfing and kayaking. The harbour is also busy with fishing: at the fish auction you can buy fresh prawns and fish straight off the boat.
At the edge of town, the IJzer flows into the North Sea at the IJzer estuary, a protected nature reserve of mudflats, salt marshes and rich birdlife. It is one of the finest walking areas along the whole coast. The monument to King Albert I at the Ganzenpoot, the lock complex that flooded the IJzer plain in 1914 and held back the German troops, recalls the region's Great War heritage.
Nieuwpoort-Bad, the coastal quarter, has a fine beach and a lively promenade with terraces. Holiday rentals range from apartments by the harbour to spacious family houses. It is a place that appeals to active sportspeople and to those seeking peace and quiet alike.
