Vielsalm is a peaceful municipality in the province of Luxembourg, in the heart of the Ardennes. The town itself is modest, but the surroundings are striking. Wooded hills, the river Salm and a network of unpaved tracks make Vielsalm a favourite with mountain bikers, walkers and anyone who wants to enjoy Ardennes nature without the crowds of better-known places. The region is also known for its phtanite, a local semi-precious stone.

The mountain bike centre of Vielsalm is one of the best in Belgium, with trails of varying difficulty for beginners and experienced riders. Walkers find restful routes through the forests, along the streams and over the ridges. The Salm valley offers plenty of marked footpaths, mountain bike routes and rivers to fish. In winter, the area sometimes gets snow and offers cross-country skiing.
