Waimes is a peaceful municipality in the Belgian East Cantons, in the province of Liège, close to the German border. Its geographical setting makes it an ideal starting point for Belgium's largest nature reserve: the High Fens. The Signal de Botrange, at 694 metres the highest point in Belgium, lies nearby. Boardwalks lead through this mysterious landscape of peat bogs, heath and marshland stretching as far as the eye can see.

Around Waimes, two lakes make the region especially appealing for families and active holidaymakers. Lac de Robertville and the lake at Bütgenbach offer swimming, sailing, windsurfing and walks along the water. Above Lac de Robertville stands the imposing Reinhardstein Castle, a restored medieval fortress open for guided tours in summer. In winter, the area around Waimes is one of the few places in Belgium where cross-country skiing is possible when it snows.
