Oudenaarde lies at the heart of the Flemish Ardennes, the hilly region south of Ghent. Among cycling fans the town is world famous: every spring the Tour of Flanders finishes here, and the Centre Ronde van Vlaanderen tells the whole story of the race. But Oudenaarde is far more than the race. Its late-Gothic town hall on the market square is one of the finest in the country, and the history of Oudenaarde tapestries comes alive in the town museum.
The surroundings are a paradise for anyone who loves cycling or walking. The cobbled climbs of the Koppenberg, the Oude Kwaremont and the Paterberg are on your doorstep, and between the hills quiet country lanes wind past fields and woods such as the Kluisbos. The Scheldt runs through the town and invites a walk along the water. After the effort, a local Adriaen Brouwer beer on a terrace on the market square tastes all the better.
Holiday homes in and around Oudenaarde range from renovated farmhouses set in the hills to town houses within walking distance of the centre. The region draws cycle tourists coming to conquer the climbs of the race, couples after a quiet weekend and families exploring the Flemish Ardennes. Outside the race weekend in April, the calm here is remarkable.
