Han-sur-Lesse: practical guide for an unforgettable stay
Han-sur-Lesse is one of the best-known tourist destinations in Wallonia. The caves are spectacular, the wildlife park is unique in Belgium and the Lesse valley offers kayaking, walking and peace in one of the country's most beautiful river landscapes. A holiday near the Han Caves is a perfect choice for families, couples and adventurers.

Han-sur-Lesse is in Namur Province, 1.5 hours' drive from Brussels and 45 minutes from Namur. The Han Caves are open from Easter to November and partially in winter. Holiday homes nearby cost €80 to €160 per night. Kayaking on the Lesse is possible from April to October. The wildlife park is open year-round.
The Han Caves: what to expect
The Han Caves are karst caves formed by the Lesse, which once flowed through this rock massif. The guided tour lasts about an hour and passes through impressive chambers with stalagmites, stalactites and an underground lake. The highlight is the Salle du Dôme, a huge domed chamber 145 metres high. The tour ends with a sound and light show in the domed chamber.
The tour is guided and departs from the village of Han on a small tram. Planning tip: book in advance in high season, the summer holidays and school holidays. The caves are accessible for children and older visitors, although there are narrow passages. The temperature in the caves is 13 degrees year-round, so bring an extra layer.
The wildlife park: European wild animals in semi-freedom
The Domaine des Grottes de Han also manages a 250-hectare wildlife park on the plateau above the village. You visit it by safari bus or on foot along marked trails. Animals you can spot include European bison, beavers, red deer, wolves, lynx, brown bears and wild horses. The park has participated for years in European reintroduction programmes for endangered species.
The wildlife park also has an educational focus: guided tours for schools and families, information panels on animal ecology and a visitor centre with exhibitions. Children love it, but adults also find the combination of nature and science fascinating. Allow at least half a day for the park.

Holiday homes near Han-sur-Lesse
The village of Han-sur-Lesse itself is small, but surrounding municipalities offer a varied selection of gîtes and holiday homes. In the village itself there are properties within walking distance of the cave entrance. Outside the village, in the forests and on the valley slopes, you'll find more privacy and quiet. Rochefort, five kilometres away, offers a wider choice of accommodation.
Those coming with a larger group should look for properties around Houyet or Ciergnon, which offers more spacious houses with gardens and is still centrally located for activities in the Lesse valley. For families with young children, it's practical to choose a property within cycling distance of Han so you can easily reach the wildlife park and the caves.
The best season to visit
The Han Caves and wildlife park are busiest in the summer holidays, the February half-term and the Easter break. Those wanting peace combined with a cave visit should choose May-June or September-October. Walking and kayaking are then more pleasant, the crowds are manageable and nature photography in the valley is at its best.
In winter the caves partially close, but the wildlife park is open year-round. Special arrangement: the nocturnal torchlit tour of the caves in summer is a popular atmospheric activity for adults. Book well in advance. The Lesse valley is also beautiful in autumn, when the deciduous forests turn and the river is calmer.
