La Roche-en-Ardenne with children: things to do and where to stay

La Roche-en-Ardenne is one of the most family-friendly destinations in the Ardennes. A medieval castle to explore, a river to play in, tree-climbing parks, kayaking and numerous other activities within walking distance of the centre. Here you will find what not to miss, what different age groups enjoy most and how to find a good holiday home nearby.

La Roche-en-Ardenne, kindvriendelijk stadje in de Ardennen

La Roche-en-Ardenne is ideal for families with children aged 4 to 14. The castle, the Ourthe and the tree-climbing park are the absolute highlights. Plan at least two nights for a relaxed visit.

The castle of La Roche: first stop with children

The castle of La Roche-en-Ardenne stands above the town on a rocky hill. For children it is a real knights' castle: ruins to climb, towers to scale and views over the valley that take the breath away. The entrance fee is modest and the climb takes only a quarter of an hour. Allow an hour for a full visit.

In summer the castle sometimes organises historical demonstrations and knight activities. Check the town of La Roche website for the current calendar. In autumn and winter the castle is quieter but no less impressive: the bare trees give a better view of the rock faces and the valley below.

Tip: visit the castle early in the morning before the tourists arrive. In the summer holidays there are already queues at the ticket office by 11am. At 9am you almost have the castle to yourselves.

The Ourthe: playing by the water

The River Ourthe flows through the centre of La Roche. Along the bank there are flat stretches where children can play, throw stones into the water or simply dip their feet in the cool water. In summer, kayakers pass by, which is always fascinating for little ones.

Kayaking on the Ourthe is possible from La Roche. Guided trips are available for children from 6 years old. Ask the kayak hire companies in the centre about options: trips lasting from one hour to half a day are available. Family trips are also possible for first-timers. The Ourthe is calm enough for beginners and varied enough for an enjoyable experience.

In summer you can also swim in the Ourthe at designated spots. Check the water quality measurements published by the municipality each year. On warm summer days the banks of the Ourthe are the heart of La Roche, with ice cream sellers, picnicking families and children's voices.

Tree-climbing parks and adventure parks nearby

Around La Roche there are several climbing and adventure parks that are perfect for active children. The tree-climbing parks in the region have courses for all ages, from toddlers to teenagers. Allow half a day for a full visit. Book in advance during school holidays as the parks fill up quickly.

For the youngest children (2 to 6 years old), the centre of La Roche has a playground on the bank of the Ourthe, free to enter and well equipped. There is also a skate park for slightly older children.

Half an hour's drive from La Roche there are also larger theme parks: Plopsaland na Izel near Florenville (about 1 hour's drive) and Walibi Belgium in Wavre (about 1.5 hours). These are ideal for a day trip from a holiday home in the region.

Walking with children from La Roche

La Roche sits in a valley surrounded by forests that invite walking. For families with children the shorter routes along the Ourthe are most suitable: flat, varied and with plenty of spots to picnic or stop for a snack.

The Boucle de l'Ourthe is an 8-kilometre walk that is also manageable for children aged 6 and over. The route follows the river and alternates between views of the water and the forest. There are no steep sections and the terrain is mostly flat. Allow 2 to 3 hours, including stops.

For slightly older children (10+), the route to the Roche à l'Aigle is a worthwhile challenge: a steep climb rewarded by a panoramic view over the Ourthe valley. Allow 3 to 4 hours for the full route.

Activity list La Roche with children by age group

  • 2-5 years: playground by the Ourthe, riverside, ice cream in the centre
  • 4-10 years: castle of La Roche, flat walk along the Ourthe, playground
  • 6-14 years: kayaking on the Ourthe, tree-climbing park, Boucle de l'Ourthe
  • 10+ years: Roche à l'Aigle route, mountain bike, Han caves
  • All ages: Wildlife Park Ardennes at Coo (30 min drive)
  • Rainy day: caves of Han-sur-Lesse (40 min drive)

Day trips from La Roche

La Roche is also an excellent base for day trips in the Ardennes. 40 minutes' drive away are the caves of Han-sur-Lesse, one of Europe's most spectacular cave systems. The guided tour lasts an hour and a half and runs in all weathers. Book online in advance.

The Wildlife Park Ardennes at Coo (30 minutes' drive) lets children see animals such as wisents, wolves and wild boar up close in a large woodland park. Allow half a day. Nearby is also the Cascade de Coo, Belgium's largest waterfall.

Durbuy, the world's smallest town, is 20 minutes' drive from La Roche and makes a lovely afternoon excursion. The centre is compact but charming, with shops, chocolatiers and a castle. Ideal for a relaxed afternoon after an active morning.

Eating with children in La Roche

La Roche has a wide choice of family-friendly restaurants and brasseries. Most terraces are along the Ourthe bank, which is pleasant on warm days. Children's menus are available almost everywhere. The cuisine is typically Ardennes-style: meat, chips and local produce.

A few practical tips: in the summer holidays the restaurants are busy and a reservation is often needed for dinner. Lunch is quieter than dinner. If you are staying in a holiday home, cooking yourself for the children is sometimes more pleasant than waiting in a busy restaurant. The local butchers and bakeries in La Roche are excellent.

Practical: where to stay near La Roche?

A holiday home in or around La Roche-en-Ardenne gives the most freedom: you have your own kitchen, space for the children to play and no fixed schedule. Properties 5 to 15 kilometres from the centre give you the peace of the countryside while keeping all of La Roche's facilities close by.

When choosing a property, look for: an enclosed garden (essential for young children who want to play outside), enough bedrooms so that parents and children each have their own space, and a well-equipped kitchen. Properties with an open fire are an extra plus for the autumn and Christmas holidays.

Book as early as possible: La Roche is popular and the best-located properties fill up quickly, especially for the summer and autumn holidays. Popular properties are already fully booked in January or February for the summer holidays.

When is the best time to go?

La Roche is enjoyable with children all year round, but each season has its benefits. The summer holidays are the busiest period but also the time with the longest opening hours for activities and the best weather for the river. The autumn half-term is less busy and the forests are beautifully coloured. The Christmas holidays offer the possibility of snow and a cosy atmosphere in the centre.

Avoid the busiest weekends in July and August if you want peace and quiet. Weekdays are always quieter than weekends, even in high season. The Easter holidays are recommended: nature is waking up, there are fewer tourists than in summer and the activities are already open.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best age for La Roche with children?

La Roche is ideal for children aged 4 to 14. The castle, the Ourthe and the tree-climbing park appeal to all ages in that range. For toddlers the playground and river are fun, but the steep hills are less suitable for pushchairs.

Are there activities in bad weather?

Yes. The caves of Han-sur-Lesse (40 min drive) are perfect for a rainy day. The castle also has covered sections. In the centre itself, chocolatiers, small museums and shops make a rainy afternoon enjoyable.

How many days do you need in La Roche?

Plan at least 2 to 3 nights for a relaxed visit. This way you can visit the castle, spend a day kayaking or walking and still do a day trip. With a week you have enough time for the Han caves, the wildlife park and other outings in the region.
