The Campine is less steep than the Ardennes, which makes it particularly suitable for older dogs or dogs that dislike climbing trails. Routes such as De Wijers, the Lilse Bergen provincial estate and the slow roads around Mol and Geel are perfect for dog walks. The region is peaceful too, so your dog arrives more relaxed than after a busy city drive.

Choose a home with an enclosed garden if your dog tends to wander. Many Campine homes have a large, fully fenced garden, which reassures owner and animal alike. When booking, also ask about the maximum surcharge per dog and whether there is an outdoor shower or garden hose for after a muddy walk.

Why the Campine with your dog?

The Campine offers what the Ardennes do not: flat terrain, wide paths and calm surroundings where your dog is not overwhelmed by stimuli. The heath around Beerse, Mol and Lommel is glorious in the late season and attracts few other dogs. Walking the heath with your dog early in the morning, with nobody around: that is the Campine at its best. The region also has more recreation areas with swimming ponds where dogs may play than the coast or the Ardennes.

What do these homes offer?

The homes in this selection are chosen specifically for their dog-friendliness. You will find an enclosed garden or extensive grounds, easy-to-clean floors and usually a tub or hose to rinse your dog after a walk. Some owners provide a basket or bowls. Always check the permitted number of dogs and any surcharge when booking.

Tips for a holiday with your dog in the Campine

  • Bring a washable basket for indoors. Not every owner opens their furniture to dogs fresh from a run through the mud.
  • The Campine has many slow roads and unpaved paths. Barely visible on Google Maps, but perfect for dog walks. Ask the owner for advice.
  • In summer the heath can get very hot. Walk early in the morning or late in the evening, and always carry water for your dog.
  • Check your dog after every forest walk: the Campine is a well-known tick area in Belgium.
