The Ardennes are at their finest during the autumn holidays. Beeches, oaks and maples turn deep orange and red, the rivers run full and the summer crowds have gone. Walking through colourful forests, gathering around the open fire in the evening: that is an autumn break in the Ardennes.

The Belgian autumn holidays usually fall in the last week of October. That is also when the autumn colours reach their peak. The forests between La Roche-en-Ardenne, Bouillon and the High Fens are spectacular then. The homes with an open fire go first, so do not wait too long.
The Ardennes in autumn are also markedly cheaper than in summer. A spacious home for 4 to 6 people costs on average 120 to 180 euros per night, against 200 euros or more in August. Outside the actual holiday week, rates drop further still: early October or after the holidays is noticeably cheaper.
The Ardennes forests consist largely of deciduous trees: beech, oak and maple. In autumn they turn spectacular colours. Walking through the woods between mid-October and early November is an experience in itself that you find nowhere else in Belgium with this intensity. Outside high season the trails are also quieter, the restaurants less full and the owners have more time for personal service.
The homes in this selection have an open fire or wood stove, a well-equipped kitchen and enough beds for the whole family. They generally sit in quiet spots, close to forests and walking trails. At most homes the owners provide enough wood for the length of the stay. Always ask whether the fire may burn overnight and whether a spark guard is present.
