Why the Ardennes during the autumn holidays?

The Ardennes forests consist largely of deciduous trees: beech, oak and maple. In autumn they turn spectacular colours. Walking through the woods between mid-October and early November is an experience in itself that you find nowhere else in Belgium with this intensity. Outside high season the trails are also quieter, the restaurants less full and the owners have more time for personal service.

• Book your home for the autumn holidays as early as August or September. The homes with an open fire are the first to go.
• The finest autumn colours appear between 15 October and 10 November. Plan your stay in that window for the best result.
• Pack rainwear. Autumn in the Ardennes means rain too, but the colourful forests are at their most striking under a grey sky.
• Plan an activity for a rainy day too: Bouillon castle, the caves of Han-sur-Lesse or a visit to Durbuy are good options.
