Belgium's rivers and lakes are well stocked with trout, salmon, pike and perch. If you enjoy casting a line from a quiet bank, a holiday home by the water is the perfect base. The Ardennes are the most popular fishing destination: the Ourthe, Lesse and Semois are known for clear water and healthy fish stocks.

Fishing in Belgium requires a permit. It is available by the day or by the year and is valid for most public waters. Some holiday homes have a private pond or exclusive fishing rights on an adjoining stretch of river, a real bonus for anyone who wants to fish in peace.
Beyond the Ardennes there are also fishing waters in the Campine, on the coast and in the Flemish polders. Each area has its own species and its own character. The host of your holiday home often knows exactly where the fish are biting.
The Ardennes have some of the best-preserved fishing waters in Europe. The Ourthe, Lesse and Semois are classics for trout and salmon anglers. The water is clear, the current is moderate and the banks are largely undeveloped. Alongside the bigger rivers there are quieter, smaller streams too.
For those after pike or carp, the Flemish lakes and ponds are a good option. The Campine has several private waters available to hire by the day. The host of your holiday home knows which spots are best and how to obtain a day permit.
The Ardennes offer the richest variety of fishing waters in Belgium. The Ourthe, Lesse, Semois and Amblève are classic trout rivers with clear, cold water and healthy fish populations. On the Ourthe between Durbuy and La Roche-en-Ardenne you will find stretches with grayling and wild brown trout. The Lesse near Han-sur-Lesse and the Semois around Bouillon and Chassepierre are popular for their quiet banks and varied fish stocks.
Those who prefer carp, pike or perch should head to the Campine or the Flemish polders. The Campine has private waters and estates with ponds that can be hired by the day or by the week. Most hosts at our holiday homes know exactly which pond or stretch of river nearby is worth a visit, even if it does not appear on any tourist website.
In Belgium a fishing permit is compulsory for most public waters. In Wallonia it is called the permis de pêche, in Flanders the visvergunning. Both are available as day, monthly or yearly permits and can be bought online through the relevant authorities or from local angling associations. A day permit usually costs just a few euros and is easy to sort out the evening before you go.
Some waters require an additional permit from the landowner or local angling club on top of the basic licence. This applies in particular to exclusive fishing waters or private stretches of river. Ask your host about the rules for the waters in the immediate area, as regulations vary by commune and by species.
A good fishing holiday home is ideally close to the water but also has the practical facilities anglers need. Think of somewhere to dry gear and clothing, a fridge large enough for fresh catch, a garage or store for rods and mats, and a terrace or covered area to dry out boots and waders. A private fishing pond or exclusive fishing rights on an adjoining stretch of river are rare but greatly valued by serious anglers.
Early starts are part of fishing. A holiday home with a separate entrance, a quiet layout or well-separated bedrooms so the rest of the party is not woken at four in the morning makes the stay more comfortable. Also check whether there is parking for a car with a trailer or roof rack for fishing gear.
Trout fishing in the Ardennes is at its best from March to October, with a winter close season that varies by region and species. Autumn is excellent for large trout and grayling on the Ourthe and Semois. Spring, when the water is cold and clear after the snowmelt, also produces good catches. Check the opening dates for each water before booking, as strict close seasons apply.
For carp and pike anglers, the Flemish lakes and Campine ponds are most productive from late spring to early autumn. Around Ravels, Mol and Bocholt there are private waters with regular stocking and good facilities. Your host or the local angling association will give you the best information on current conditions and recent catches in the area.
