An enclosed garden makes a holiday home a lot more relaxing. The dog can roam freely without you having to keep an eye on him every minute. The children play outside while you sit on the terrace. No worries about a nearby road or an open field. Holiday homes with a fully enclosed garden are scarce but very sought after.

Most enclosed gardens in our listings are completely closed off with a sturdy fence and a lockable gate. The height varies: for small dogs a low fence is sometimes enough, for larger breeds a higher barrier is needed. Always ask the owner about the specific details.
Beyond safety, an enclosed garden also offers privacy. No glances from passers-by, no view from the neighbours. Simply your own patch of outdoors, for the length of your stay.
Holiday homes with an enclosed garden can be found across every Belgian region, but the offer is largest in the Ardennes and the Campine. Country properties tend to have more space for a generous fenced plot than properties in more urban or coastal areas. On the coast, enclosed gardens are less common because of the smaller plots.
More and more owners consciously cater to dog owners and families with young children. An enclosed garden is an absolute must for these guests, and that is reflected in the descriptions and photos of the properties.
A fully enclosed garden transforms a holiday. The dog can roam freely without you watching every single moment. The children play outside while you drink a coffee on the terrace. No cars appearing on a farm track, no open field the dog would bolt into. That peace of mind is at the heart of what an enclosed garden provides.
For dog owners, an enclosed garden is often the very first search criterion, even before the size of the property or its location. Holiday homes with a genuinely solid fence are rarer than properties that simply allow pets. That explains why they book up quickly: the combination of pets welcome and a truly fenced plot is less common than most people expect.
Enclosed does not always mean fully secure. Always ask the owner about the height of the fence. A medium-sized, active dog will clear 100 cm without much effort. For most dogs, 150 cm is a safe measure; for larger breeds or strong jumpers, 180 cm is preferable. Also ask whether there is a lockable gate at both the front and the back of the property, so the dog cannot slip out via the driveway.
Look out for weak spots: a gap at the base of a timber post, a garden gate that does not close properly, or a low corner beside the terrace steps. Do not hesitate to ask the owner for an extra photo of the less visible corners of the garden. Owners who have had dogs themselves know exactly where the gaps are and will usually share that information readily.
The two main groups are obvious: dog owners and families with young children. But anyone who wants to picnic outside without passers-by looking in, or sit in the garden in the evening without neighbours watching, will also appreciate a screened terrace or enclosed garden. In this type of property, privacy and safety come as a pair.
For families with babies or toddlers, an enclosed garden can be just as essential as it is for a dog. A child who can walk but does not yet understand danger needs exactly the same kind of protected outdoor space. If you are combining the property with both a dog and young children, a fully enclosed plot becomes close to a necessity if you want to arrive on holiday truly relaxed.
The Ardennes and the Campine have by far the largest offering. Properties on generous rural plots, whether a chalet near Durbuy or a farmhouse in the Antwerp Campine, are more likely to have room for a proper fence. In the Flemish Ardennes you will also find beautifully renovated houses with a fully enclosed garden, convenient for anyone who does not want to travel too far from Ghent or Brussels.
On the Belgian coast, an enclosed garden is more the exception than the rule, since plots there are smaller and the sea remains the main attraction. In the Gaume and the Semois valley, a growing number of properties have a generous enclosed plot, sometimes with a view over the hills. Use the enclosed garden filter in our listings to see straight away what is available in your preferred region.
