Holiday with your dog on the Belgian coast: the best tips for a successful beach stay

The Belgian coast is one of the most dog-friendly coastlines in Europe, if you know where to go. There are specific beach sections where dogs are allowed all year round, municipalities that actively invest in dog-friendly infrastructure and a growing supply of holiday accommodation welcoming dogs. But there are also strict rules you need to know, especially in high season.

Dog on the beach on the Belgian coast

Dogs are allowed on specific dog beaches along the Belgian coast. Outside the bathing season (September to April), dogs are welcome on many beaches. In high season (1 June to 15 September), strict restrictions apply. The most dog-friendly municipalities are Bredene, De Panne, Ostend and Koksijde.

Which beaches allow dogs?

Each coastal municipality has its own rules for dogs on the beach. Most municipalities ban dogs from swimming beaches from 1 June to 15 September during supervised hours (generally 10am to 6pm). Outside those hours and outside the bathing season, dogs are welcome on most beaches.

In addition to the general rules, there are permanent dog beach sections along the entire coast where dogs are allowed all year round, all day. These zones are marked with signs and sometimes fenced off. Dog beaches are popular and can be busy during the summer season. Keep your dog on a lead when other dogs or people are nearby.

It is strongly recommended to check the specific rules of the municipality you are visiting before you leave. Rules can change slightly from year to year. Most coastal municipalities publish their rules on their municipal website and post signs at beach entrances.

The best coastal towns for dogs

Bredene is the best-known dog-friendly coastal municipality. It has a large dog beach in the Duinenwater area and is known for its relaxed atmosphere. Bredene has no casino and is less touristy than Knokke or Blankenberge, which makes it more pleasant for dog owners.

In Ostend, dogs are allowed at the western jetty outside the bathing season and at a specific dog beach. The city also has a good range of dog-friendly restaurants and terraces. If you enjoy urban vibes and want to bring your dog, Ostend is an excellent choice.

De Panne has an extensive dog beach in the western section towards Bray-Dunes. It is one of the largest dog beach sections on the coast and borders the Westhoek nature reserve, providing extra walking opportunities. De Panne also has a large supply of holiday homes in the dunes.

In Koksijde and Sint-Idesbald, there are several dog beach sections and the Doornpanne dune area offers extensive walking possibilities. Dogs are not allowed in the protected dune area itself, but the surrounding walking paths are perfect.

Dog beach sections by municipality (selection)

  • Bredene: Duinenwater, permanently accessible all year round
  • Ostend: Western jetty (outside season) and Mariakerke
  • De Panne: Western beach towards Bray-Dunes, large and quiet
  • Koksijde: Sint-Idesbald western beach, near Doornpanne
  • Nieuwpoort-Bad: specific zone east of the centre
  • De Haan: Wenduine-east (outside season, check rules)

Holiday home or apartment with dog on the coast

The supply of dog-friendly holiday accommodation on the coast has grown strongly in recent years. Hosts notice that dog owners are loyal guests who stay longer and return regularly. Most dog-friendly accommodation is found in less touristy municipalities such as Bredene, De Panne and Koksijde.

When booking, pay attention to location: a holiday home within walking distance of the dog beach is a big advantage. Also check whether there is an outdoor area where your dog can stay when you are on a beach that does not allow dogs. An apartment with a balcony or a house with a small garden is handy.

Also ask about the rules in the building or holiday home: is the dog welcome in all rooms? Must it sleep outside? Are there other pets nearby? Many hosts have clear house rules for dogs. Always read these before booking.

What to bring for your dog

Sand and salt are not the best combination for your dog's ears and eyes. Bring a small bottle of fresh water to rinse your dog's eyes after swimming in the sea, and check the ears for sand or moisture after each beach day. Excessive sand in the ears can cause irritation.

A parasol or sun sail is not a luxury but a necessity when you sit on the beach with your dog. Dogs can overheat quickly, especially on the beach where the reflection of the water and white sand intensifies the heat. Never sit in the full afternoon sun without shade for your dog.

Also bring a long tracking lead (5 to 10 metres) for the dog beaches. On most dog beach sections dogs do not need to be on a lead, but during busier periods and around other dogs a lead is useful for maintaining control. Always check that your dog responds well to recall before letting it off the lead.

Dog-friendly restaurants and terraces

On the Belgian coast, more and more restaurants and terraces welcome dogs on their terraces. It is always wise to call ahead to check whether the dog is welcome on the terrace, especially in high season when terraces are full. Most dog-friendly restaurants are found in the dune municipalities and less so in the busiest centres like Knokke or Blankenberge.

In Ostend there are a number of established addresses known to be dog-friendly, especially in the Mariakerke district and along the promenade near the Westerstaketsel. In De Panne the small brasseries in the side streets of the centre are generally more accessible for dogs than the large terrace brasseries on the main square.

Always ask your host for recommendations for dog-friendly restaurants near the holiday home. Local knowledge is better than generic guides, and hosts who have a dog themselves know exactly which addresses are welcoming.

Rules and fines: what you need to know

Rules about dogs on beaches are actively enforced in high season. Municipal supervisors check the beaches and can issue fines for dogs on forbidden beaches. Fines vary by municipality but can reach up to 250 euros. Always check before stepping onto the beach.

Dog waste on the promenade, in the village and on walking paths must always be picked up. All coastal municipalities have strict rules about this. Always bring enough bags and use the special dog waste bins placed along the promenade and in the dunes. This is not only a legal obligation, it is also a matter of respect for other beach visitors.

Frequently asked questions

Are dogs allowed on Belgian beaches all year round?

Outside the bathing season (September to April-May, depending on the municipality), dogs are welcome on most beaches. In high season, dogs are restricted to specific dog beach sections. The exact dates and zones vary by municipality, so always check the rules of the specific municipality.

Which coastal municipality is the most dog-friendly?

Bredene is known as the most dog-friendly coastal municipality and has a large permanent dog beach. De Panne, Koksijde and Ostend also have good facilities for dogs. The busiest tourist municipalities such as Knokke-Heist and De Haan are stricter in high season.

Can I take my dog on the coastal tram?

Yes, dogs are welcome in the Kusttram provided they are on a lead and wear a muzzle (compulsory for large dogs). Small dogs in a carrier bag are generally also welcome. Check De Lijn's current rules before you travel.

Are there dog beach sections where dogs can swim in the sea?

Yes, at most official dog beach sections dogs can also swim in the sea. Bear in mind the currents: the Belgian coast can sometimes have strong waves. Never go far out to sea with your dog and keep an eye on it when it is in the water.
