Holiday home La Roche-en-Ardenne: complete guide to the most adventurous spot in the Ardennes

For many, La Roche-en-Ardenne is synonymous with the Belgian Ardennes. The town on the Ourthe, surrounded by high forests, is the ideal base for walking, kayaking, mountain biking and adventure. At the same time, La Roche has its own historical character: the castle high above the town, the narrow streets, the cosy terraces along the river. Here is everything you need to know if you're looking for a holiday home here.

Holiday home near La Roche-en-Ardenne with a view of the Ourthe

A holiday home in La Roche-en-Ardenne costs between €80 and €250 per night for 2 to 8 people. The town itself is small, so most homes are in the surrounding villages (Hives, Maboge, Beausaint, Cielle). Book at least three months ahead for high season and school holidays. Adventure activities (kayak, mountain bike, paintball) define the character of the area.

Why La Roche-en-Ardenne?

La Roche sits in a natural amphitheatre: the Ourthe loops around a high rocky outcrop, and on that rock stands the medieval castle. The small town (3,500 inhabitants) developed in the river's bend, giving it a unique compactness. From most places you can see the castle rising above the rooftops, and you can always hear the murmur of the Ourthe. That gives La Roche an atmosphere rarely found in a larger town.

The surroundings are packed with activities. Within a ten-minute drive you'll find kayak hire, mountain bike parks, climbing forests, paintball, quad tours and even a playground with cave visit. That makes La Roche an exceptionally good destination for families with children between 6 and 16, for groups of active friends, or for couples who love active weekends. Also see our range of holiday homes in La Roche.

At the same time, La Roche has enough history and gastronomy for a quieter holiday. The castle itself is a major attraction, and the town has museums on ceramics (La Roche was known for its pottery), on the Battle of the Bulge (end of WWII) and on local life. On rainy days, they're worth their weight in gold.

The castle and the town centre

The Château Féodal of La Roche is a ruin that remains impressive. It was built in the eleventh century and was an important seat of power for centuries. Today it is a tourist attraction reached via a 15-minute climb from the centre. The view over the town and the Ourthe is one of the finest in the Ardennes. Entry costs about €8 for adults.

The town centre itself is small but charming. The Place du Marché is the heart, with terraces and restaurants. The Rue du Châmont and the Rue Châmont lead you through typical Ardennes streets with natural stone architecture. For children: the Sentier des Schavés is a walk with fairy-tale characters through the forest behind the town, free of charge and beloved by families.

Tip: visit the castle early in the morning (before 11 am) or late in the afternoon (after 4 pm) to avoid the bus-tour crowds. In summer, evening sound-and-light shows sometimes bring the castle's history to life, recommended if you want something other than a standard tourist visit.

Kayaking on the Ourthe: the iconic activity

Kayaking the Ourthe from La Roche is, for many, the ultimate Ardennes experience. The river is calm enough here for beginners but has enough current for a bit of adventure. Operators usually offer two options: a short trip (8 km, 1.5-2 hours) and a long one (16 km, 3-4 hours). Both end where a bus brings you back to the centre.

The main operators are Kayaks Brandsport and Kayaks Wonders. Prices are around €25 per person for the short trip and €35 for the long one. Book ahead in high season, especially for weekends. Kayaking runs from late April to October, depending on the Ourthe's water level (too low = not possible, too high = closed for safety).

Tip: go on a weekday for the most peaceful experience. At weekends, especially in July and August, hundreds of kayaks can be on the river at once, making it more of a busy outing than a nature experience. And bring old shoes: your feet will get wet (and the rocks at the bank are sharp).

Other outdoor activities

Mountain biking: La Roche has three officially marked MTB routes (green, blue, red) of 15 to 40 km. Centre rentals offer regular and electric mountain bikes from €25 per day. For experienced riders there are also free-ride trails in the Bois de la Roche. A helmet and good shoes are recommended.

Walking: for less active days there are dozens of walking routes from La Roche. The most popular is the loop around the Ourthe meander (10 km) with spectacular viewpoints over the town and castle. Shorter and family-friendly: the Sentier des Schavés (3 km, fairy-tale walk) or the walk to Cielle (5 km, with a restaurant at the end).

Other popular activities: paintball at Domaine de la Champignonnière, the climbing wall at Adventure Valley near Durbuy (30 min drive), the caves of Han-sur-Lesse (45 min) or a wellness day in a private sauna. La Roche itself also has a small swimming pool and a playground for children on the bank of the Ourthe.

Where to stay: the districts and villages

Holiday homes in the town of La Roche itself are rare and more expensive. They're usually apartments or smaller homes, often without a garden but with great location, everything within walking distance. For those who want the town buzz without a car, this is a good choice. Prices around €100 to €180 per night.

The surrounding villages offer more space for less money. Hives, 5 minutes by car, has spacious holiday homes with large gardens. Maboge (10 min) is quieter and has authentic Ardennes farmhouses. Beausaint (5 min) sits on a hill and has chalets with spectacular views. Cielle (10 min) is a quiet village on a meander of the Ourthe and is ideal for those seeking pure tranquillity.

For large groups (10+ people), the farmhouse properties in villages like Borzée, Marcourt and Hives are excellent. Here you'll find renovated Ardennes farms with 5 to 12 bedrooms, often with private sauna or pool. For a romantic couple: look for a small chalet with private terrace overlooking the forests, especially in Beausaint or Cielle. Also see La Roche-en-Ardenne with children for family tips.

Eating and drinking in La Roche

La Roche has a surprisingly good restaurant scene for its size. Typical Ardennes dishes are everywhere: beef stew with fries, Ardennes ham, pâté, game in season. For a good classic: Au Vieux Moulin in the centre (along the Ourthe), or L'Os à Moelle for something more refined. For pizza or pasta, several good Italian addresses.

For lunch on the go: Faraj bakery on the Place du Marché has excellent quiches and sandwiches. For sweets: the Devresse patisserie makes fantastic tarts and local specialities like 'tarte au sucre' (sugar tart). On Saturdays there's a small market with local produce on the Place du Marché.

Have a drink at one of the cosy bars on the Place du Marché after sunset, or at the Brasserie de la Place for a simple but pleasant evening. Trappist beers like Chimay and Rochefort come from the area and are always on the menu. For something stronger: local genevers and Ardennes plum elixir are well worth trying.

It's the ideal age for children between 6 and 16: kayaking, mountain biking, climbing forest, paintball for the older ones, the Sentier des Schavés fairy-tale walk for the younger. Many holiday homes have gardens and play space. The short distances between activities also make it practical.

What happened to La Roche-en-Ardenne in the Second World War?

In December 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, La Roche-en-Ardenne was 90% destroyed in two days. Of 639 houses, 348 were levelled and 287 heavily damaged. 114 civilians died. The Germans occupied the town from 21 December 1944 until liberation on 11 January 1945. La Roche received the title of 'martyr city'. Both are historic Ardennes towns, but with different characters. Durbuy claims to be the world's smallest city and has a cosier, more touristy atmosphere with many restaurants and shops. La Roche is slightly larger, sits more spectacularly in a meander of the Ourthe, and focuses more on outdoor activities. La Roche is better for active families, Durbuy for urban charm.
