Rent a Holiday Home on the Belgian Coast: 15+ commission-free

A holiday home by the sea offers something no hotel can match: the freedom to cook your own meals, walk to the beach early in the morning, and sit on the terrace late in the evening with the sound of the waves in the background. But how do you go about renting a holiday home on the Belgian coast? This guide gives you everything you need to know.

Rent a Holiday Home on the Belgian Coast: 15+ commission-free

A holiday home on the Belgian coast is cheapest outside the school holidays (May, June and September are ideal). For the summer holidays, book at least 4 to 6 months in advance. Sea-view apartments in Knokke or Ostend start at €80 per night in low season and can reach €250 during the summer holidays. Larger homes for families or groups average €120 to €400 per night depending on size and location.

Why choose a holiday home over a hotel?

A holiday home gives you a home-away-from-home feeling that a hotel room can never match. With children, the difference is greatest: you have your own kitchen for breakfasts, a living space to keep the games, and a garden or terrace for the evenings. You pay per property rather than per person, making larger groups often cheaper than separate hotel rooms. You also have more freedom with your schedule: no fixed dinner times, no breakfast departure hours.

Which type of holiday home suits you?

On the Belgian coast you find roughly four types of holiday accommodation. Beach apartments are the most common: from studios for two to spacious three-bedroom apartments for a family. Beach houses and coast guard houses are self-contained homes, often slightly further from the beach but with their own garden, more privacy and more space. Bungalows in holiday parks suit those who want sociability and facilities. For large groups there are also larger villas, though these are rarer on the coast than in the Ardennes.

What does a holiday home on the Belgian coast cost?

The price depends on four factors: location (Knokke and Ostend are more expensive than Bredene or De Panne), time of year (high season costs two to three times more than low season), property type and distance to the beach (sea views and seafront positions cost extra). As a guide: a studio for two costs €50 to €80 per night in low season, €100 to €150 during summer holidays. An apartment for four to five people goes from €80 to €130 per night in low season to €160 to €280 in high season.

When to book for the best price and availability?

Summer, Easter and Christmas holidays are the busiest times on the Belgian coast. For summer holidays: the earlier you book, the more choice you have. Popular properties in Knokke, Ostend or De Panne can be fully booked as early as January. Those who are flexible choose May or June: the beach is quieter, prices are lower and the weather is often more pleasant than in busy July. September is the secret favourite of holidaymakers seeking peace and quiet.

What to look out for when booking?

Always check that the property is the right distance from the beach for your needs. Look at what is included: bed linen, towels, parking and end-of-stay cleaning are not always standard. Check the cancellation policy. Also look at the minimum stay: many coastal properties only rent by the week in high season. And for dog owners: always check whether pets are welcome, as this is far from guaranteed on the coast.

Practical tips

  • Early booking pays off: For summer holidays, book at least 4 to 6 months in advance. If you wait until May, the best properties will already be gone.
  • Low season is golden: May, June and September often offer the same property at half the price, with quieter beaches and a more relaxed atmosphere.
  • Watch out for extra costs: End-of-stay cleaning (€50 to €150), tourist tax (€1 to €3 per person per night) and a security deposit are often not included in the advertised price.
  • The coastal tram as an alternative: You don't have to stay in the most famous resort. A property in Bredene is cheaper; with the coastal tram you are in Ostend in 15 minutes.
  • Check parking options: Parking by the sea can be expensive. Ask whether the property has its own parking space, especially in Knokke or Ostend.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a holiday home by the sea cost on average per week?

During summer holidays, an apartment for 4 people on the Belgian coast costs on average €900 to €1,600 per week. A larger house for 6 to 8 people can reach €1,500 to €2,800 per week in high season. In the shoulder season you easily pay half as much.

Can I book a holiday home for a long weekend?

Outside school holidays, many properties rent by the day or long weekend (Friday to Monday). In high season, most coastal properties rent only by the week, Saturday to Saturday. Check the minimum stay for each property.

Which resorts are cheapest on the Belgian coast?

Bredene, Middelkerke and Nieuwpoort are generally cheaper than Knokke, Ostend or De Panne. Properties slightly further from the beach, such as in the polders behind the coastal towns, are also considerably cheaper than properties right on the promenade or beach.

What is the difference between a coastal apartment and a beach house?

An apartment is in a building, shares a lift and hallway with other holidaymakers and generally has no private garden. A beach house is a detached or semi-detached home with its own garden and more privacy. Beach houses are rarer and more expensive, but offer more space and freedom for families or groups.
