Holiday in Bouillon: castle, Semois and tranquillity in the Ardennes
Bouillon sits in the south of the Belgian Ardennes, deep in the valley of the Semois. The town is famous for its Crusader castle, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Belgium, and for the remarkable Semois meander that almost completely encircles it. A holiday in Bouillon is a holiday of peace, nature and history.

Bouillon is about 2 hours' drive from Brussels and Liège, and 1.5 hours from Namur. Holiday homes in the area cost between €90 and €170 per night for 4 people. The region is attractive all year round, but most beautiful in spring (May, June) and autumn (October, November).
The castle of Bouillon
The castle of Bouillon dates back to the 10th century and is inextricably linked to Godfrey of Bouillon, leader of the First Crusade. The castle dominates the valley from its rocky outcrop and can be seen from afar. It is one of the most visited attractions in the Belgian Ardennes, and rightly so: the structure is impressive, the walls are metres thick and the view over the Semois meander from the ramparts is spectacular.
The castle is open all year except during the coldest winter months. A visit with children takes around two hours on average. The narrow corridors, hidden cellars and cannons on the ramparts are particularly appealing to children between 6 and 14. Book tickets in advance during high season and holiday periods.
The Semois valley: a unique landscape
The Semois is one of Belgium's most picturesque rivers. It winds through a broad, green valley flanked on both sides by wooded hillsides. The area around Bouillon, Vresse-sur-Semois and Membre is protected and has a distinctive, varied landscape quite unlike the rest of the Ardennes.
Walking along the Semois is the best way to discover the valley. The GR long-distance trail that follows the Semois is one of Belgium's finest. Shorter day walks from Bouillon are also possible: the Rocher du Hérou and the Tombeau du Géant are two viewpoints above the river that are not to be missed.

- Kayaking on the Semois (rental points in Bouillon and Membre)

Holiday homes in Bouillon and the Semois valley
The range of holiday homes around Bouillon is varied. In the town centre you will find smaller houses and apartments, suitable for couples or small families. Outside the centre, in the hills and forests around Bouillon, there are larger houses for groups, often with big garden and terrace. These properties generally offer more peace and privacy.
The Semois valley further east, towards Vresse-sur-Semois, has an offering of authentic houses and cottages built in the typical slate style of the region. These homes are popular with walkers and those who want to completely disconnect. Shops and restaurants are scarcer there, but the nature is all the more beautiful.
When to visit Bouillon?
Bouillon is worth a visit at any time of year, but the finest periods are May to June and September to November. In May and June nature is in full bloom: the Semois valley is a deep green, the paths are dry and a castle visit is pleasant without the summer crowds. In September and October the beeches and maples turn and the atmosphere in the valley is particularly intense.
July and August are the busiest months. The castle and town centre attract many visitors then. Those seeking quiet choose a house outside the centre or shift their holiday outside the peak season. Winter is peaceful but atmospheric: the castle is partially closed, but the walks through the bare forests around Bouillon are striking.

The castle's history is concrete and well documented. Godfrey died four years later in Jerusalem, on 18 July 1100, with no heirs to buy back the castle. Bouillon thus became a permanent part of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège.
